From discriminative hiring practices to sexual harassment and wrongful termination, there are many signs that can indicate unfair treatment in the workplace. To ensure employees are given a fair and just work environment, here are 8 warning signs of unfair treatment at work:
1. Job Obligations Outside of Your Contract - If you’re asked by a supervisor or manager to do something outside of your job description, this could be a sign that you’re being taken advantage of.
2. Unreasonable Demands - If coworkers or employers constantly demand more than is reasonable or ask you to stay later than usual with no additional compensation or praise, this may be an indication of unfair treatment.
3. Discriminatory Comments & Behavior - Employees should never have to tolerate discrimination—whether it be directed at them, their colleagues, or any person in the company regardless of gender, race, religion, sexual orientation etc.
4. Lack of Promotion Opportunities - If hardworking employees aren't offered promotions—particularly when those promotions are due—this could signal a workplace geared towards favoritism rather than meritocracy.
5. Unreasonable Work Hours - The majority of people expect (and agree upon) full time hours for their job; if you're expected to stay late without compensation for duties falling out of your contract's scope this is likely an indication that your employer isn't treating you fairly .
6. Sexual Harassment & Inappropriate Remarks - Any type of lewd commentary should not be tolerated in the workplace; if you feel like someone is making inappropriate remarks then it's best to report it as soon as possible before it escalates into something worse.
7. Retaliation for Speaking Out – Retaliation in any form (including threats and bullying) for speaking out about unethical behaviors is illegal and unacceptable -- such behavior often points toward an unhealthy organization culture where employees feel unsafe voicing their opinions.
8.Unspoken Rules/Expectations – Do certain members seem exempt from rules? Are some departments treated differently? These discrepancies suggest discrepancies between staff that can lead to finger-pointing and power struggles instead of camaraderie and collaboration among workmates.
